The GOTS standard (Global Organic Textile Standard) was developed by the International Association of the Natural Textile Industry (IVN) together with the Soil Association (SA), the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and the Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA). GOTS is now recognized as the world’s leading standard for the processing of textiles made from organically produced natural fibres. At a high level, it defines environmental requirements along the entire textile production chain and at the same time demands compliance with social criteria.
Only textile products that consist of at least 70% organically produced natural fibers can be certified according to GOTS. Fashion and textile processing must also face up to today’s social challenges in terms of sustainability and environmental protection. It must completely rethink the way textiles are produced and traded. Organic fibers are used to ensure that textile processing is sustainable and has less impact on the environment. Because what counts most is the health of people and nature in order to preserve our habitat.
Chemical additives used in the Global Organic Textile Standard, such as dyes and auxiliaries, must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria. Corresponding requirements also apply to the use of accessories.
The standard evaluates the processing and production of textiles according to both ecological and social criteria. This is the only way to build a truly sustainable textile industry. This means that an assessment according to the Global Organic Textile Standard carefully examines every single production step – from the chemicals used to the ethical treatment of workers. Only if companies and products meet all the criteria of the standard are they certified according to GOTS.
