Promotional clothing is one of the most effective instruments of corporate communication. It ensures a professional brand image, strengthens recognizability and creates a uniform appearance for employees at trade fairs, events or in daily customer contact. However, the quality of corporate clothing is not determined by the textile alone. The choice of the right finishing technique is at least as important.
Companies today are faced with a wide range of options: Screen printing, DTF printing, embroidery, PVC patches or woven labels each offer different advantages. The optimum solution depends on factors such as quantity, motif, material, washability and reorderability. As textile experts with our own printing and embroidery facilities, we have been advising companies on this decision for many years. In this article, we compare the most important finishing techniques for promotional clothing and show which solution is best suited to which application.

Why the choice of finish is often underestimated
Many companies invest considerable budgets in corporate fashion and promotional textiles. Despite this, finishing is often only considered at the end of the procurement process. Yet it is precisely this that determines how high-quality the finished product is perceived and how long it can remain in use.
In practice, we often see companies struggling with fading prints, insufficient wash resistance or high costs for repeat orders. This becomes particularly problematic with long-term clothing concepts where new employees have to be regularly equipped.
In addition, the requirements of many companies have changed. Whereas in the past several hundred textiles were often ordered at once, today smaller and more frequent repeat orders are often placed. Not every finishing technique is equally suitable for this. A well-founded selection therefore creates the basis for a long-term, economical and high-quality solution.
A comparison of the most important techniques for textiles with logos
There are numerous finishing processes available for promotional clothing today.
Screen printing impresses with high wash resistance and brilliant colors for large print runs.
Screen printing transfer combines high quality with flexible further processing.
DTF printing is ideal for small and medium print runs and detailed motifs.
DTG printing enables photorealistic motifs to be printed directly onto cotton textiles.
Sublimation printing is the preferred solution for polyester functional clothing, as the color is permanently incorporated into the fiber.
Flock printing creates a high-quality, velvety surface.
Flextransfer printing is particularly suitable for numbering and simple logos.
Direct embroidery and embroidery patches are considered to be particularly high-quality and durable.
3D PVC patches create a striking three-dimensional look.
Weblabels complement high-quality corporate fashion collections with additional brand labeling.
What requirements modern promotional clothing must meet
Today, modern promotional textiles have to do much more than simply carry a logo. Employees expect comfortable, durable and visually appealing clothing. At the same time, companies need economical solutions with reliable availability.
Particularly important here are:
-
High wash resistance
-
Long-lasting brand presentation
-
Pleasant feel
-
Good wearing properties
-
Economical repeat orders
-
Uniform appearance over many years
A study by the European Environment Agency also shows that the useful life of textiles has a significant impact on their environmental footprint. The longer clothing is worn, the more sustainable its overall balance becomes. High-quality finishes therefore make an important contribution to conserving resources.
Against this background, the choice of finishing process should not be based solely on the most favorable price, but should always take into account the planned service life.
Which technique is the right one depends on the type of textile, area of application, quantity and budget. A high-quality business polo shirt often requires a different finish than a functional shirt for a running event or a softshell jacket for field service.

*The actual washability also depends on the textile, yarn, patch material and the respective manufacturer’s instructions.
Why a customer switched from screen print transfer to DTF printing for their workwear
A long-standing customer had its promotional clothing produced with screen print transfer motifs for many years. The process was ideal, as larger quantities were ordered regularly and the set-up costs could be spread over many textiles.
Over time, however, the order structure changed. Instead of large production quantities, smaller repeat orders were increasingly required. New employees, additional teams and short-term projects meant that the previous processes reached their economic limits.
We analyzed the situation together and decided to switch to DTF printing. The result was quickly convincing. The motifs have a high-quality feel, brilliant colors and high wash resistance. At the same time, even small repeat orders can now be produced flexibly and cost-effectively.
This example shows how important it is to regularly review existing finishing concepts and incorporate new technical possibilities into the decision-making process.
Sustainability and quality standards for promotional clothing
In addition to finishing, the sustainability of the textiles used is playing an increasingly important role. Companies are paying increasing attention to transparent supply chains, certified materials and fair production conditions.
Important standards include
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
GRS (Global Recycled Standard)
GREEN KNOB
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
Sustainable promotional clothing does not only mean using certified materials. Equally important is a durable finish that enables the clothing to be used for as long as possible. High-quality printing and embroidery processes help to reduce replacement purchases and conserve resources.
For companies, this creates a combination of a professional brand image, economic use and a credible sustainability strategy.
